The K-Zone: A G-scale garden railway

Note: Since I recently moved house, work on this railway, and these pages, has ceased. I am currently working on a new G-scale railway, taking into account what I learned from this one.
I have always had an ambition to construct a `proper' garden railway, that is, in G scale. The problem is that, like most London properties, our house has a garden the size of a postcard. Although it is physically large enough to accomodate a G-scale railway, it was clear from the outset that the project would involve a fair amount of construction work to avoid contention for garden space. In the end, we built a new walled section to accomodate the railway and some plants, etc.
Although the garden railway is small - it is smaller than our indoor OO layout - it features a lake, a bridge, a tunnel, and an industrial works with real steam-powered machinery. These pages describe our experiences.
