C++ tutorial: introduction

This introduction section explains for whom this tutorial is intended, what it covers, and makes some introductory remarks about the role of the C and C++ languages in the modern computing industry.

Under construction
The C++ tutorial is under construction, and has been that way for some time. I originally prepared it to accompany a course I was running on C++; I don't teach C++ anymore, so to be honest it's likely to be under construction for an indefinite period. I have left it in place because people still write to me and tell me they find it useful. If anyone wants to take it over and finish it, please feel free.
