What hypothesis?
Experimental design: what is the question?

What question are the experimenters trying to answer?

Bodgett and Scarper are starting from a weak position because they don't know what question they want to answer, or the question is invalid

We have already seen that the question ``is my system any good?'' is not one that can be answered readily

Normally, the experimenters should start with an hypothesis (an assertion), and ask the question ``is this assertion true?''. Naturally, the assertion needs to have a definite truth or falsity

Ideally the hypothesis should be framed before doing any experiments
