alien

Last modified: Thu Feb 23 16:37:37 2006

In British law, an alien is defined by exclusion: anyone who is not a British citizen, or one of a number of other privileged groups, is an alien. The term is normally used to refer to foreign nationals in the UK, rather than aliens from outer space, although the rules imply that the latter will be legal aliens, if and when we encounter them. On the whole, the law assumes that aliens will be subject to the same legal rights and responsibilities as citizens (see: BritishCitizenship), with the following exceptions.

  • They have no right to vote in elections, or to become MPs
  • They have no right to work, although a permit may be granted
  • They must register their whereabouts with the police

Aliens who engage in criminality may be deported.
