stare decisis
Last modified: Thu Feb 23 16:37:38 2006
A binding precedent (see: Precedent). The term literally
means `let the decision stand'.
If a legal system applies stare decisis
-- as the UK's does -- then decisions made by a court become
binding on courts of similar or lesser stature when similar
circumstances are applied. In effect,
these decisions add to the body of law (see: CommonLaw).
