utilitarianism
Last modified: Thu Feb 23 16:37:38 2006
A form of socio-political organization based on the principle of utility
propounded by Bentham. The principle of utility seeks to establish
an objective standard for the social benefits of peoples' actions.
In brief, the `utility' of an action is the amount by which it increases
the amount of `good' that people experience. A `good' is anything that
increases pleasure or reduces pain. The principle of utility says
that society should be organized so as to maximise the total utility.
The principle is conveniently captured in the aphorism `the greatest
good for the greatest number'.
